Aims
of Programme:
1
To provide a training in educational psychotherapy for teachers, educational psychologists, learning mentors and others with substantial experience in education. Educational psychotherapy is a mode of treatment for those children whose
learning has been inhibited by emotional and social
factors.
2
To enable the trainees to deepen their understanding of
the emotional factors in learning.
Programme
Membership:
The
programme will be relevant to teachers, educational
psychologists, learning mentors and others with substantial experience in education working in a variety of settings where they
encounter individual children and young people with specific areas of learning
failure.
Fees:
·
Course fees - £3,200 per annum (inclusive of
registration fee to Middlesex University and supervision
fees)
· Caspari Membership Fee - £50
(Students are required to be members)
Time
Commitment:
The
course is of four academic years' duration for three
ten-week terms. There is a new intake each autumn.
During term-time, one evening a week (Thursdays, 6.15 - 9
p.m.) will be spent in attending seminars, and one day a
week (or two half days) in a placement where the trainee
will obtain practical experience in educational psychotherapy.
In alternate years one hour per week will be spent
observing a baby/young child.
Approximately
two hours per week will be needed for writing up notes on
practical work. Time for relevant reading will also be
required.
Outside of these regular commitments, time will be needed
to prepare pieces of formal written work which are required for
qualification.
Personal Psychotherapy:
An
experience of personal psychotherapy is a requirement for
the course. It is expected that trainees will begin
therapy at least six months before beginning the
supervised practice of educational psychotherapy, and will continue throughout the training.

The
seminars are held at Caspari House, 1 Noel Road, London N1
8HQ.
The
practical placement will be individually arranged for each
trainee (see below).

Practical Placement.
Students
will attend a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Centre for one day each week (or two half
days), during term time for at least two years.
Here the student will be expected to: ·
Work with at least two children individually, on a
regular sessional basis, carrying out educational psychotherapy.
·
Have weekly individual supervision sessions on this
work from an approved supervisor. This may take place
elsewhere if necessary.
·
Gain experience of working as a member of a
multi-disciplinary clinical team.
·
Attend case conferences and meetings.
·
Gain contact with other agencies, such as schools,
special units, centres for children with special
educational needs and social services.
·
Engage in
joint/parallel multi-disciplinary team work with family
members.
Assessment
of Practical Work:
The
educational psychotherapy practice in the placement is assessed
on the basis of reports from the educational psychotherapy
supervisor and placement clinic. Students also
write a case study of one of the supervised educational
psychotherapy cases.
Organisation:
The
course is organised by the Caspari Foundation and is
validated by Middlesex University.
The Caspari Foundation is a full member of the United
Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) which compiles an
annual National Register of Psychotherapists, including
educational psychotherapists. The award of the MA/PG Dip does not
automatically lead to eligibility for registration, but
goes a long way towards meeting the necessary criteria.
