Loss & Bereavement project

No matter what age you are, when someone close to you dies or becomes separated from you, it can be difficult to deal with the emotions that arise. It becomes much harder if you are young and do not have the life experiences to draw upon that might help you deal with, and come to terms with, those emotions.

Our Loss and Bereavement helps children in school who have experienced loss through death, divorce, separation or loss of their country and culture. Working closely with school staff at all levels we identify children who have suffered a recent bereavement or loss and work with them in a group setting at their school. For those that need it, individual therapy sessions take place at our specially adapted premises in Hackney, N1. Children use the groups to share and explore common experiences and emotions around their loss, in the process, learning from each other as well as from our specially trained therapists.

When 12 year old Jade was born her mother was already suffering from a brain tumour.

Jade never knew her mother well. Despite this she was the centre of Jade’s world and when she died Jade, as she put it herself, ‘got bad’ at school. Jade has been supported through the project and with individual educational therapy sessions. She never misses a session and uses every minute to help herself. Feedback from the school shows a very good improvement in her focus, learning and behaviour. Coming to Caspari Foundation has been, in her own words, a ‘chance to be myself and grow good again’.
