MA in Educational Psychotherapy

This is a four-year part-time coursed for trained teachers, educational psychologists and others with substantial experience in education. It aims to develop a high level of understanding of children and young people with emotional, behavioural and learning difficulties, and to develop therapeutic skills in working with these children.

What new skills will I learn?

The basis of the work is in attachment and psychoanalytical theory and the application of these ideas in an educational context.

Trainees who successfully complete the course can expect to develop a high level of understanding of children and young people with emotional, behavioural and learning difficulties, and to develop therapeutic skills in working with them.

Opportunities for educational psychotherapists include working with children and with small groups in school, facilitating nurture groups and working in advisory teams.

This is a masters level programme comprising eleven modules.

3 Work discussion A
4 Work discussion B
5-6 Clinical and school based placement
7 Group and family dynamics
8 Conscious & unconscious processes in mental functioning
9 The inner world & creative expression
10 Attachment theory; A psychodynamic approach to the assessment of learning difficulties
11 Dissertation
